Pre-implantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD)

PGD is used in conjunction with In Vitro Fertilization to identify embryos with genetic abnormalities and/or for the purpose of family planning when the patient would like to choose the gender of the child to be born.

Evaluation of embryo genetic normality or abnormality helps us to decide which embryos would be best for transfer.  This increases the chance of achieving pregnancy and a healthy baby.   Patients with the need for PGD will undergo genetic counseling and may need to have a sample of their blood sent to the genetic lab in preparation for testing of their embryo.

During the IVF cycle, an embryo biopsy will be performed by our embryologist three to five days after egg retrieval.  The sample will then be sent to one of the genetic institutes we associate with for testing.  Based on the test results a decision will be made about the embryo transfer.
